The Secondhand Smart Home Market Is Bigger Than You Think
New smart home gear is expensive. A Roborock Qrevo runs $1,400 retail. A full Arlo security system can hit $850. But the secondhand market on Craigslist SF Bay Area tells a different story — people upgrade, move, or lose interest, and their gear floods the market at 30-60% off.
I scanned 190 listings to find what’s actually available and what things really cost. Here’s the breakdown.
Smart Locks
The used smart lock market is deep. Most people switch ecosystems (Aqara → Yale → Lockly → August) and sell their old locks cheap.
| Model | CL Price | Retail Price | Savings |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aqara Smart Lock U100 (Apple Home Key) | $80 | $180 | 56% |
| Yale Assure Lock 2 Plus (AirBnB/Home Key) | $80 | $200 | 60% |
| August Smart Lock (ASL-03) + Wi-Fi + Keypad | $80 | $160 | 50% |
| Lockly Secure Pro (NEW IN BOX) | $125 | $250 | 50% |
| Schlage keypad lever lock | $25 | $70 | 64% |
The deal: August and Aqara locks are the best value. The Aqara U100 with Apple Home Key support at $80 (56% off retail) is a no-brainer for HomeKit users. The August bundle with Wi-Fi and keypad at $80 covers everything you need for under $100.
The trap: Make sure the previous owner removed the lock from their account. August and Yale locks bind to the original owner’s account — if they didn’t factory reset, you’re buying a brick. Ask before you buy.
Thermostats
Nest and Ecobee dominate the used market. Most sellers upgraded to the latest generation or switched ecosystems.
| Model | CL Price | Retail Price | Savings |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Nest Thermostat (2024) | $80 | $130 | 38% |
| Nest Thermostat (3rd gen, used) | $45 | $100 | 55% |
| Ecobee 3 Lite | $60 | $170 | 65% |
| Honeywell T9 Smart Thermostat | $80 | $150 | 47% |
The deal: The Ecobee 3 Lite at $60 is the best buy. It includes a remote sensor, supports Alexa and HomeKit, and the 65% discount is unmatched. The Nest at $45 is also solid if you just need basic scheduling + remote control.
The trap: Nest thermostats are tied to Google accounts. The seller must remove the device from their Nest/Google Home app before you can set it up. Ecobee devices are easier to reset (factory reset from the device menu).
Robot Vacuums
This is where the biggest discounts live. People buy high-end robot vacs, use them for 6 months, and sell when they upgrade.
| Model | CL Price | Retail Price | Savings |
|---|---|---|---|
| Roborock Qrevo Edge (NEW, unopened) | $499 | $1,400 | 64% |
| Roborock S7 (used) | Free/cheap | $600 | 90%+ |
| Samsung Jet Bot AI+ | $200 | $800 | 75% |
The deal: The Roborock Qrevo Edge at $499 (still sealed) is an absurd deal. The S7 being offered for free or near-free means sellers just want it gone.
The caveat: Robot vacs with LiDAR sensors (Roborock, Dreame) degrade over time. A $499 Qrevo Edge that’s new in box is great. A $50 S7 with 3 years of use might have a dying laser sensor. Ask about age.
Security Cameras
The Ring and Arlo ecosystems cycle fast. People buy starter kits, add more cameras, then switch platforms.
| Model | CL Price | Retail Price | Savings |
|---|---|---|---|
| Blink Wired Floodlight Camera (x3) | $150 | $300 | 50% |
| Blink Video Doorbell + Sync Module | $50 | $100 | 50% |
| Arlo Gen5 Ultra + 2K XL Cameras + Alarm | $850 | $1,500 | 43% |
| Wyze Cam Floodlight (NEW) | $60 | $90 | 33% |
The deal: The Blink ecosystem is the sweet spot — cameras are cheap, and the $50 doorbell + Sync Module bundle gets you started for next to nothing. Arlo at $850 is premium but 43% off retail.
The trap: Blink and Arlo both require cloud subscriptions for full features. Blink’s plan is $10/month for unlimited cameras. Arlo Secure starts at $8/month per camera. The hardware discount disappears fast if you’re paying monthly fees.
Mesh Wi-Fi
As Wi-Fi 7 routers hit the market, Wi-Fi 6 and 6E gear is flooding the used market.
| Model | CL Price | Retail Price | Savings |
|---|---|---|---|
| Netgear Orbi Wi-Fi 7 (RBE971+Satellite) | $499 | $1,000 | 50% |
| Google Nest Wifi Pro 6E (4-pack) | $325 | $600 | 46% |
| eero 6 Mesh (5-pack) | $80 | $250 | 68% |
| Google Wifi Mesh (7 points) | $150 | $500 | 70% |
| Netgear Nighthawk Wi-Fi 6 (3-pack) | $90 | $300 | 70% |
The deal: The eero 6 5-pack at $80 is the standout. You get whole-home mesh for under $100. The Google Wifi 7-point system at $150 is also excellent value for larger homes.
The trap: Older mesh systems (eero 6, original Google Wifi) don’t support Wi-Fi 6E or Matter. They’ll work fine for streaming and browsing, but if you’re building a smart home with Thread/Matter devices, invest in a Wi-Fi 6E or 7 system instead.
Smart Lighting
Smart bulbs hit the used market at near-fire-sale prices.
| Model | CL Price | Retail Price | Savings |
|---|---|---|---|
| TP-Link Tapo RGBW Bulbs | $5/each | $15/each | 67% |
| Lohas Smart WiFi Bulbs | $4/each | $12/each | 67% |
| Govee 100ft RGBIC LED Strip | $60 | $80 | 25% |
The deal: TP-Link Tapo bulbs at $5 are the best value in smart lighting. They support Alexa, Google Home, and routines without a hub. Buy 10 for $50 and light your whole house.
The Smart Home Starter Pack (Used, Under $150)
If you’re building a smart home on a budget, here’s a complete starter setup from today’s Craigslist:
- Hub: eero 6 mesh (5-pack) — $80
- Lighting: 6× TP-Link Tapo bulbs — $30
- Thermostat: Nest 3rd gen — $45
- Lock: Schlage keypad — $25
- Doorbell: Blink Video Doorbell — $50
Total: $230 — vs ~$600 retail for the same gear.
What This Tells Us About the Market
The Craigslist smart home market reveals some interesting trends:
Ecosystem churn is real. People switch from Ring to Arlo, from Nest to Ecobee, from August to Aqara. The used market is flooded with last-generation gear from switchers. For buyers, this is great. For sellers, it means resale value drops fast.
New-in-box doesn’t mean full price. Many listings are “NEW, unopened” at 50% off. These are gifts, unwanted bundles, or impulse buys. If you don’t need a warranty, buying sealed from CL saves hundreds.
Wi-Fi 7 is the next wave. The Orbi Wi-Fi 7 system already appearing on CL means early adopters are flipping. Wi-Fi 6 and 6E prices will continue dropping through 2026.
Smart locks have the best margins. The gap between CL and retail is widest for locks (50-64% savings). Probably because they’re the easiest to install and the most frequently upgraded.
